Microsoft To Buy Skype For $8.5 Billion
Looks like Microsoft jumped in and swooped the deal! Just last week, it was reported that Facebook and Google were close to sealing a deal with Skype, Microsoft must have jumped in at the last minute.
Many analysts think Microsoft’s $8.5 billion bid was waaaay too high! I have to agree, Skype lost $7 million last year and only 8.8 of their 170 million users are playing customers. This was likely a defensive play for Microsoft, to block Facebook or Google from acquiring Skype’s VOIP technology.
We can expect Microsoft to incorporate Skype’s video conferencing technology with their Windows Phone 7 platform, Xbox Connect and Windows Live. I’m sure they will also build their newly acquired VOIP technology into a branded social networking platform.
From The Press Release:
“Skype is a phenomenal service that is loved by millions of people around the world,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “Together we will create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world.”
Here’s Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer going crazy, definitely a classic!
