The Commodore 64 Returns
I still remember my first computer, the Commodore 64. The 8-bit beast packed a staggering 64 kilobytes of RAM, I harnessed that horsepower to write (using Basic) some of the world’s greatest Mad-Libs apps! To load a program, I had to bust out the ol’ cassette deck and literally wait long enough to watch paint dry. Nicknamed “The Breadbox”, the Commodore 64 became the best selling personal computer of all time.
Although the C64′s heyday has long past, it’s 1s and 0s carry on. That’s right folks, Commodore is bringing back the 64! From the Commodore website:
It’s back… and better than ever! The new Commodore 64 is a modern functional PC as close to the original in design as humanly possible. It houses a modern mini-ITX PC motherboard featuring a Dual Core 525 Atom processor and the latest Nvidia Ion2 graphics chipset. It comes in the original taupe brown/beige color, with other colors to follow.
The new Commodore 64 will begin shipping this month. You can soup it up with 4GB of RAM, a Blu-ray player and 7.1 surround sound! The 2011 C64 can run Linux, Windows Vista or Windows 7. You can even run all your old C64 software with a built in emulator! This is without a doubt, the throwback of the year!
