Here's How To Get GPS On Your Wi-Fi Only iPad 2

Great news, you can get GPS on your Wi-Fi only iPad 2!  Even better news, you can get it for free, well sort of…

For those who don’t know, the iPad 2 comes in two flavors, Wi-Fi only and 3G.  The 3G version has a GPS chip, the Wi-Fi version does not.   So how the heck do you get GPS on a device with no GPS chip?  Read on my friends..

Recently, Apple released iOS 4.3, which allows you to use your iPhone as a personal Wi-Fi hotspot.  Well, it turns that “Personal Hotspot” transmits GPS information to a Wi-Fi only iPad 2.  Voila, you can now use all those great GPS iPad apps on your Wi-Fi only iPad 2!  Please note, Personal Hotspot requires a monthly subscription, see Verizon or AT&T for more details.

Don’t wanna pay?  There’s an app for that!  If you have a jailbroken iPhone, head on over to the Cydia store and buy an app called MyWi.  For $20, MyWi will let you hotspot your iPhone all you want without any monthly fees.  Check out the demo below:

This marks the 100th Post for Techni Glee! I want to thank everyone who has visited. It’s been a lot of fun, y’all come back now!

    Great blog I must say!

    And a question…?
Rather than using an iphone (don’t have one) as a personal wifi hotspot, can I simply use any personal wifi modem (mobile broadband – free standing – not usb), tether my wifi only Ipad 2 to it and obtain GPS navigation that way?

    Love to here your thoughts
