Facebook Begins Streaming Movies

Facebook has joined forces with Warner Bros Entertainment to roll out a social based video on demand service. The new service allows users to rent a movie directly from the movie’s fan page.

The first movie up for rent is “The Dark Night”. It will cost $3 or 30 Facebook credits for a 48 hour rental. More Warner Bros movies will soon roll out to Facebook, with the option to digitally rent or purchase.

Facebook, with over 600 million users, could pose a serious threat for other streaming providers such as Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. Social integration will likely set them apart from their competition.

From the press release:

“Facebook has become a daily destination for hundreds of millions of people,” said Thomas Gewecke, President of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. “Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts. It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world’s largest social network.”
