NINTENDO, 3DS TO SHIP MILLIONS, STOCK PERFORMANCE, VISION WARNING
Reuters: On February 26, Nintendo will launch their highly anticipated 3DS hand held console. They will initially begin selling Units in Japan, where they plan to ship 1.5 million units in the first month alone!. The units will sell for about $300. The glasses free 3D hand held will reach US and European shelves in March, Nintendo plans on unloading a total of 4 million units before April 2011.
Nintendo Stock has had a couple of rocky years after the incredible success of their Wii platform. They’ve had to face increasing competition from Apple Inc. with their iPhone, iPod Touch and now iPad offerings for the casual gamer. Microsoft and Sony now offer higher resolution motion gaming control to one-up Nintendo’s controller-less innovations. Nintendo needs a Blockbuster to send their shares back to their 2008 levels. Four million units in less than five weeks could do the trick.
CNET: Nintendo’s website recently warned that the glasses free 3D technology could damper eye growth for users less than six years old. These facts could be rather damaging for a company which caters to adults as well as the very young.
Earlier today, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata acknowledged the possible impact: “We are being proactive about informing our customer, even though it may not necessarily be positive for our sales,”
I think the warning will blow over. The 3DS technology is pretty groundbreaking. Besides offering true 3D gaming with out glasses, the 3DS also offers a 3D camera, photo editor, pedometer (Wii fit integration?) and a the capability of viewing 3D videos.
